C clip or no c clip

I have the 1990 YJ and I see that the diff could be 1 of 2 types according to my chiltons and quadratec catalog. Any way to tell which without flooding myself with gear oil? 4cyl d35 rear open diff manual tran 5speed. I want to order a locker and new gears.

if I'm not mistaken, 90 was the first year with a c clip. 88 and 89 hadno c clip. You probably should look just in case to make sure of this. Check brake end to see if there is a retaining bracket.

most often, the non c clip 35 will have a steel drain plug rather than a rubber one. this is not a foolproof method, but it may help
