  • TJ: Trailer Wiring

I need to wire my Jeep up so I can tow a small dirt bike trailer. I have a Rock Hard bumper with a tow rated hitch and frame tie ins, but I'm not wired to plug the trailer in for lights. Can anyone walk me thru what I'll need to buy and how to wire it up? The trailer has the normal 4 pin plug. Thanks!

I think I have easy wire connector from drawtite.
Either way places like pepboys carry a connector that T's out your trailer wire from the tail light connector on the left rear corner inside of the tail light area

Any body used something like this? Any tips on the installation. I'm sure this is pretty basic, I've just never messed around with electrical stuff before.

I am doing the same now. My research only confused me more. Some say you have to go behind both sides and plug in connectors, others say after 2004 you only have to go behind left side, while others swear that you go behind passenger side only. Mine is a 2005, but sold in 2004 so I really don't know.
Quadratec website shows installation instructions that show you have to connect behind both taillights. Look there for instructions with pictures.
I always have trouble disconnecting the connectors. I seem to break the clips that hold the two pieces together. Anyone know the secret?

That looks pretty cool,I always have to use a test light to find the right wire and splice into the harness. That looks like you just plug in between the connecters to your tail lights.

Its as much fun getting dirty as it is being dirty in a Jeep!

Those work pretty good just put some dielectric grease inside the connectors first

I did the same on my friends 06 unlimited...and I believe it was all behind the left tail light. Easy way to tell is to pull left side tail light out and if the harness has 4 wires going into one connector with 2 more coming off going into a second harness..this would be the only side you have to connect trailer harness to. I do admit, I did this a few yrs back..and memory is affected with age

I have 4 wires on passenger side, 3 on drivers side. Bought the "Hoppy" trailer harness for 1997-2004 Wranglers. Instructions show plugging in on Passenger side. I'll post how it went on Monday. Mat

I bought Hopkins harness from Pep Boys. It easily plugged into drivers side (where I had 4 wires, not 3 as previous post). Now the weird (wired) part. Left turn signal turns on trailer right side turn signal, and right turn signal turns on left trailer side. I read about this on a search, and so wasn't surprised. The harness only plugs in one way, so it is not on backwards. In the new harness I spliced the green to the yellow, and the yellow to the green, and it works perfectly.

So did you guys only have to mess around on the driver's side? All the instructions I've been seeing for the plug and play ones show you going in from the bottom of the tub on the rear corners (behind the plastic wheel well cover) and plugging in to the existing plug on both sides.

I bought the Mopar harness, since when I did my research on it a few years back it seemed the consensus was that it was much better made and worth the extra money. On my '99 it plugged in on the passenger side, but I think which side varies by year.

Driver side only on my 05(built in 04). Things changed sometime between 04 and 05 so yours may be different. I looked in both sides and mine were not hard to get to.
After you pull down the plastic cover, use some air to blow out the dust and dirt in there, so you don't get a facefull. Mat
