Winch Out

Had to use the winch the other day and was unable to engage it into the manual position to free spool out. Luckily i was able to power the winch out. Before I take it apart, does this sound as if dirt got in the winch body or something a little more serious?

What kind of winch? My brother had a similar problem with his. I'll ask him how he fixed it.

The ring that engages the gears got water init and had some corrosion Took it apart cleaned it up greased it and good to go
