  • TJ: TJ steering box upgrade?

Well my steering box sprung a leak and needs replacing. Question is is it worth it to upgrade to a 99 durango box or just put in a stocker? I have read rats post and he's seems to like the upgrade but I am not sure if he used a box for a durango with snow plow attachment or not. I believe the difference is one is faster, but is that a good thing especially with a jeep that gets driven on the highway too fast might be too touchy on the road. I guess the bigger piston or internals would make it easier on the pump but will a stock pump keep up? LMK what you guys think.

I did the durango box from napa but it took two boxs to get a good one. I also put a smaller pulley from PSC on the pump. If I was going to do it again I would go PSC or have someone rebuild it and drill it for hydraulic steering.

I just read this thread on here and he ended up having more issues than you with the psc boxes. http://www.myjeeprocks.com/forums/sh...eering+upgrade I really dont want to spend $499 for a steering box alone either. Curtis did you get the standard durango box or the one for snow plow attachment? Other than the fact the first one was bad hows the good one treating you? Any noticeable steering changes like speed ,radius & strength? Did you use your stock box as a core?

I got the regular box and it's working good. Changing the pulley size helped alot. Turn in old box.

I put a non snow plow box on my 97 TJ it works fine but makes a ticking sound, it was a junk yard box so figures.

              My :2:

I did the Durango box and haven't had a lick of trouble. If you get one from NAPA they will normally replace it without question if it starts leaking or anything. I've had nothing but good experiences with NAPA and the parts they sell. Just get the non plow version. It bolts right in. Mine has been in use for over two years now.

Do you need to upgrade the power steering pump, or will the stock unit work.

Stock pump works great with the Durango box.

Works great in my XJ, there may be an aluminum block in front of the box you would need to remove. Also a good time to throw on a brace.
An XJ will always cost you less then any girl ever will, and you will always know when the spark is gone.
