  • CJ7 w258 oil filler cap

    Hello all,
    1980 CJ7 w/ 258,bone stock except tires and wheels.

I have had the CJ since new.
I have fought a leaking oil filler cap on the valve cover many times. I find a new one that is tight enough not to leak and it eventually does.
Orignal one lasted longest, but even it leaked after some years. The replacements I have found, if they don't leak when new, they may last a year or two before they do.
The cap is plastic and the valve cover is original equipment metal. The valve cover has inside splash guards at the PVC and breather tube grommets, but none at the filler cap.
Anyone know of a good nonleaking replacement even if not a Jeep part?
    Thanks for the help.

the fix I have found as I have the same style on the Yj, is a small piece of bicycle tire inner tube.

Take off the supplied rubber gasket/grommet from the cap. cut an inner tube to the same shape as the cap, but with a smaller diameter opening than the original gasket.

Place the inner tube piece on the cap, then reinstall the original grommet.

Mine has been leak free for a couple months now.

I cannot take credit for the fix, i found it on a Cj forum when researching other fixes for the 4.2L.

      Hope this helps.
