I think the dolly is the best option. I have seen a few with brakes for under $1000. And with a dolly you are prepared to tow more than just one Jeep.

OK, now that you are talking about a "dolly", that would be the way I would go of the two choices.
FWIW: my #1 choice is a trailer.

Mine too but the weight of the trailer plus the Jeep exceeds the towing capacity of my 4Runner.

A normal trailer weighs about 1200 lbs. I think my Jeep weighs over 3800 lbs. Am I wrong?

FWIW: My Jeep CJ-7 checks in at 3750 lbs as per CHP.
that is with a full tank of gas(20gal).
What does a "dolly" weight in at??
My "Featherlite" 22' flatbed was under 1300 lbs(CHP).

I would guess that a dolly weights around 200lbs. They are easy to move around by hand. And more importantly for me they can be stood up on end to store in a small space.

For those reading this thread who want to put on a good brake controller, I would recommend the US Gear. I put one on my JK and it works very well.

One of the features I like is that you connect the towing vehicle 12v to the towed vehicle, which keeps the battery charged. This means on the JK you do not have to disconnect the battery.

My 4Runner is rate to tow 5000lbs. I has the factory tow package so it has an ATF cooler and 4.10 gears.

Read the manufacturers fine print. Your 4Runner maybe rated for this weight as long as what your towing has brakes. I my case 6000lbs is the rating but if I don't have brakes the rating drops to 1000lbs over GVWR which I was over. Sound confusing? I found this info. in the owners manual. I tow with an RV (E450) weighing approx 12-13,000lbs GVW is 14,050lbs (not much wiggle room) combine GVWR is 20,000lbs as long as there's brake, 15,050 CGVWR w/o brakes. I was mislead about weight ratings, no more since a couple of panic stops, I read the manuals carefully.
