  • Thermostat housing cracked! Sigh.

How in the heck does that happen? I noticed coolant. I traced it down to a crack in the housing. So, off to get a new one tomorrow. Stock still good or is there a better one? Maybe off a new model?

    Let me know. Thanks.

If you over tightened it or didn't get the seat right when you put you new thermostat in it will crack.

If there is a tiny bit of old sealant or a piece of the old gasket on the block where it sits it will crack also.

It was put on when the head was done. I didn't do it. So, it hasn't been touched since. The crack is in the middle, about 2" long.

That was a few months ago. It just now leaks? Anyway, he's not at that place in Oak hills anymore (forget the name). He did it on the side. He has since quit. So, Autozone has it for $17. Going to call them right now and go get it.

                $17.95

Well, $17.95 at Autozone. Used my "rewards card" so it was free. Came with gasket. Although, I also RTV it. Went through that recently with wife's car. Going to replace top radiator hose while it's off just for peace of mind. New clamps too (need to go get them, forgot).

Job completed. No leaks. The temp has remained good with the new fan! The digital guage shows in the coolant at 177* and it is about 100* outside. This was at idle for 30min. I did rev the motor once in a while to get 3000RPM's. Just to see if I could get the temp to raise. Nope. So far so good! Glad I did the mod. Here is what I ended up replacing today. T-stat housing, top radiator hose, and (2) hose clamps (shown in picture). I did replace the third clamp but it broke (and it was new). I put some coolant in. RTV the gasket and all is good!

                    Any questions, just ask.

                    Ron

                    Digital guage showing 177*

Guage inside cab. When it looks like this it is 177*

                    New t-stat housing.

They had it at Autozone!? Good grief, I can't even get axle bearings from those guys.

Glad you got it fixed...the price was right, huh? Just a PITA.
