  • Lockers?

Once again I have another beginner question... What are lockers and what do lockers do?

Here are a couple of links that may lead you to more reading on various subjects that may be of interest to you:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Locking_differential

In a nutshell a locker keeps power to both wheels on an axel when one wheel loses traction. It does so by locking the entire assembly as if there were a single rod from one wheel to the other.

That's greatly oversimplified, but it may serve as a foudation for understanding more.

    Hope that helps.

That's a common question and few understand what a locker is. The writeup called "What? Why do I need a locker? I thought I had 4WD!" at http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=242949 I wrote several years ago will probably answer most of your questions.

Depending on what locker you install determines on it's total function. I have a Richmond Lockright in my 96 XJ for the rear. Its sole purpose for me is to lock up both rear wheels under load to give power to both wheels. On the pavemant in normal driving conditions, it will unlock when making turns so that it doesnt chew up the tires prematurely. An unlocked rearend will only supply power to one or the other wheel, usually the wheel that has the least resistance to it. This can make for a difficult trip up a trail that is very uneven or with alot of rocks. There are many different types of lockers and a vast variety of prices. Check out the website for more info that were posted up above. Good luck with your selection.
