  • No gears??

I have a 99 jeep wrangler ( no modifications other then tires). this past wkend I was on the highway when all of a sudden I had no gears..pulled off the road...tried 4 wh high, low, and regular gears...nothing worked. had to get towed
what do u think it is??

If the transfer case popped into neutral, you'd get that situation. If it's at your house, crawl under it and check the linkage - manually pop it either forward or back and see what you get.

[COLOR="Sienna"]Expensive ... if you can't fix it yourself.

I recommend process of elimination. I have to make some assumptions here:

      1) it's a manual transmission
      2) you didn't hear any unusual noises before 'losing gears'.
      3) the transmission still shifts (stick feels as if it's shifting into gear)
      4) drive shafts do not move when you try to drive

      Some of many possibilities:
      - Clutch may be toast (friction surfaces smoothed)
      - output shaft to transfer case is snapped (I would assume you'd have heard something if that happened)
      - Transfer case shift lever is broke/disconnected and you've slipped into neutral...

Others on here know WAY more than I do, but maybe check these to start with?

edit: see, Jeff types faster than I do.
