Biggest difference is the wheel base. Jeep made the 7 so that it is more comfortable and stable, and would be able to run an automatic transmission.

CJ7 1976 to 1986 wheel base 93 with two track widths. Replaced by the YJ.
CJ5 mid 50s to 83. around 81 wheel base. Big differnces in engines trans axles, steering brakes, wiring and all over the years. Big body change in 75 or 76.

Real world. Cj5s suck on the hwy but rock on the trail. Cj7s suck only moderately on the hwy and rock on the trail. Both would tow behind your truck like you wouldn't know they were there.

If money is an issue get a YJ or an XJ (Cherokee)
They can both be turned in to an awesome trail rig fairly easily. Love the old CJ's but they are getting a bit pricey and aren't really all that much fun to drive on the street
