I wanna gear the front axle to 4.88's but my rear has 4.56. Can I drive around provided I dont engage 4x4? How does that work?

Well I'm sticking with my original stance . . . I'm a bit paranoid and would remove the front drive shaft, but if you did that, nothing is going to the TC from the front and it wouldn't matter what gears were in there as it's just spinning on it's own. That which does not kill me postpones the inevitable.

There is NO need to remove the front driveshaft with axles geared differently so long as you don't engage 4x4. You could have 3.07 in the frot and 5.13 in the rear and it'd still be fine so long as you know enough not to pull the lever into 4x4.The Geezer Jeep: http://www.greentractortalk.com/jerryb/index.htm

As long as you're not getting good traction, there's nothing wrong with running different gears in front and rear, but you don't want to hook traction with different ratios.
I hear of farmers here that only lock 4wd in the mud prefer a higher ratio in the front for positive steering.
I doubt a D-35 would hold up long like that.'98 TJ, Steve-www.itsajeep.org
