  • Steering box

Put a durango steering box in my 2000 wrangler 2 weeks ago. Now after a couple hours of hard rock crawing my steering goes out. cann't turn left and right turn is real hard. Did put syn. oil in it. But after it cools down or I rev up the engine it works find. Any Ideas?

How well did you bleed the system after installing the steering box? Exactly how did you bleed it and was the engine running during the initial bleed procedure?

To many add ons to fix it. May have to go back to stock steering box.

It is possible to get a bad rebuilt box. Exchange it for another and see if thats the problem.

                          Curtis,

I Did the same swap, except I Told the guy at Napa Dakota instead of Durango. I used to have a Dakota it the name just stuck. I don't know if they are different but it has been working perfect and is a huge inprovement over stock. It seems that the turning ratio is a little bit faster, but part of that is the better response and lack of slop and play.

Well talk to gen- right and PSC. Gen-Right said go Hydraulic PSC said try Smaller pulley and then larger pump then Hydraulic. I put Valvoline syn. steering fluid in with new box. PSC said don't use it. So I flushed the system and put Royal Purple Max EZ. Orderd smaller pulley from PSC. So let you know how it works.

As long as the fluid doesn't cook or or foams it should be allright. If you loose your power steering when hot either your fluid foams or the steering box is no good ( the seals on the power piston start leaking when hot or the valve spool starts sticking)
