  • Multi-port Fuel Injection Conversion

One of the Mechanics where I work made me an offer I can't refuse.

He offered to install a complete multi-port fuel injection system he has on a wrecked '88 Cherokee. I have to do is pay him $300.00 for labor and he'll gIve me the parts. The only thing I have to buy is a new fuel pump.

I asked him if this swap from a 4.0L to a 4.2L enginge would work. He told me to go to partsamerica.com and put in both vehicles and see if the intake manifold gasket is the same part number! By golly he was right-on. I called my smog guy and the BAR Referee office and they both said the same thing. I'll need to have the referee look at it after it's installed to verify that everything needed is on there and he'll afix a permanent bar code type sticker on the Jeep for smog techs to use.

I probably shouldn't have posted this so I don't get jinked! Anyone have any experience with such a swap??

Who-hoo if this happens I'm going to be $h!tt!n' in tall cotton! If this happens, anyone want to come over and I'll set up the Carter BBD carb for a target?

    Roger,

If you take it to A-Action Automotive in Hesperia they will smog it and not think twice about it. Owner Steve is a fellow Jeeper and is the most straight guy I have ever delt with as far as repair / smog stuff goes. Good luck, now there will not be those P.O.S. Jeep stories you keep telling me. YEA!!!

I think the only thing you need is the hesco cranck sensor kit that goes on the crankshaft dampner (cranckshaft pulley. Since there is no hole for it in the bellhousing. Unless he wants to go swap out the bellhousing

        AW,

He mentioned something about installing a sensor, but I had no clue what he was saying, it went right over my head! This mechanic has a great reputation so I'm sure he'll do it right.

Thanks for bringing up! I'll ask him about it.

          Thanks Mitch,

My smog guy at Precision Auto in Victorville will have no problems smoging it. I've called him and talked to him about the conversion and he gave me the information about the referee.

BTW, LeAnne is going on a quad run with lady gang so I have the day off so to speak. Do you want any help with your Lakewood Project? Call me or PM me and let me know I'd be happy to head on down there with you.

Just a FYI, I found that with a quick search...I KNOW there is one by Mopar for their FI kit. I would prefer the one they tell you to purchase for the Mopar kit.

That is the wrong CPS. Try this one.

                  http://www.hesco.us/shop.asp?action=...097&catId=7902

1988 is a Renix inject system, not mopar. The Mopar injection setup is based on a 1995 and is the same as 91-95XJ.

Thanks for the link Ron, great reading. I could never have the nerve to try a project like that. Monday, I'm going to talk to my mechanic and get more information on the sensor. I know he talked to me about it, but is was (still is) way over my head, but at least I now know what it is!

                            Hey Roger,

If you have any questions on this give me a call. I have the 4.2 with Mopar Fuel Injection. I use the HESCO sensor. Runs like a champ. If you friend is pulling the parts of a 4.0 motor, pull of the 4.0 litre head. Putting the 4.0 head on a 4.2 motor with the Mopar FI system is a pretty nice set up. That is what I am currently running, and it has lots of HP and torque for an inline 6.

                              Note.
It is not a mopar setup. It is a renix setup (1987-1990).
Renix is a renault and bendex combo, it is a good dumb injection setup.
I have a renix it was cheap, it runs sooo much better the the BBD carb and 4.2.
Nothing in the electrical is compatible between mopar and renix.
