  • about to smog the jeep

97 tj 4.0 in so cal. my question is, i have a K&N slip on in place of my stock air box. will it pass smog at a test only smog shop visually?

Maybe... if it's a K&N FIPK, it is CARB approved and it should have come with the sticker so the guy doesn't have to go look it up. If it's a cone filter slapped on stock intake parts, you may have problems.

No problem on the K&N filter inside the air filter box so long as it's still stock on the outside. Just make sure your Jeep is FULLY warmed up, as hot as you can get it before they start on the test. They'll sometimes purposely let them cool off before the test starts so they won't pass so don't let them allow it to cool off before they start the tests. The engine has to be fully warmed up/hot before it has a good chance of passing. Any cooler than that and odds are it won't pass the N02 part of the test.

Mine looks like this, and I just took it to the closest smog only shop and passed with flying colors:

I passed with a dynamax cat. It's an OEM replacement... you're good.

I felt I had to put the pre-filter on there after all the K&N bashing that goes on. (Jerry, where are you? )

That you've cut off your factory air tube to mount the K&N brokenujoint is enough for your engine to fail the visual test here in California. I had done the same thing, did not pass the visual inspection part of the smog test, and had to buy an aftemarket air tube from TurboCity that had a CARB acceptance sticker on it so it could pass the smog test. It's been through 3 smog tests since then and each time, the smog test guy looks to verify that the CARB acceptance sticker is present on the air tube.

Heh, for sure Mat I wouldn't run a K&N without 1-2 pre-filters over the top of it.

Second one is on order ...

Seriously though, I am not the skeptic of K&N that you, and others including Dukes and many others are, but I'm not brazen enough to run it without the pre-filter after all the things I've seen.

Oh I am well beyond the skeptic stage where K&N air filters are concerned Mat.

well i passed smog with flying colors other than the need for a new gas cap (10.00). with the online coupon and a free car wash out of it i think i did well. he didnt check for any CA legal markings on the dynamax high flow cat or even question the K&N. .. RELIEF

                        Now don't you feel silly!

What were your test numbers? I'm curious to see if the cat and intake did anything to them as opposed to stock numbers.

                          Smog Check.

                          Glad you made it.
I took mine in today to a test only station. Passed. Am good for another 2 years. Only reading near max was NO(PPM) 517 VS 522 at 15 mph. At 25 mph was less than 1/2 of max 311 vs 775. Is that exhaust as my cat and muffler has been on there a few years?

I just took mine in and had it smogged, (California...always got their hand in your pocket!) Here's a pic of what I'm running on my 2.5L. I got this thing on e-bay (OK, So it looks like a tuner....and you can stop laughing now!) It works just the same as those high priced intakes but costs about a 1/3 of the price!..... and it's passed smog twice now! Both times the guy told me that if it failed for any reason he would have to fail me on the visual test as well. But, both times he's tested it, it's passed with no problems!

...... and yes, I've kept the stock intake box, just in case!
