  • Converting CJ from Carb to EFI

Okay, I really don't like the carborator on my 4.2L

    Here's my questions:

Howell's are reasonably priced and CARB legal - any problems with them?

How difficult is the conversion? Is this a don't try this at home leave to a trained professional or is a DYI project? (I totally suck as a mechanic)

It will take me a while to save up the coins to do this. But before I even start to save, is it worth it? Last fall I put a rebuild motor in my Jeep.

    Thanks!

thanks for the info, here in the People's Republic of Kalifornia, we're very limited as to what we can do. I think Holley discontinued their EFI

Roger, I went through the Howell kit. So far, I am happy. It needed a little tweaking, but support from Howell was great. My issue, and a lot of other issues (from researching) have to do with the kit running rich. When I failed smog terribly, because I was running WAY too rich, Troy from Howell burned me a new chip, and had it to my doorstep within the week (free too). I passed with flying colors after that.

If you go that route, I'll try to arrange a day off of work and assist you. My total install time was about 5 hours.

            Thanks Steve!!

It will be a while before I get to this project. I have large number of vacation days so I would schedule it at your convience! Unless of course you wanted to take a day off!

is there anything I can assist you with??

            Thanks again!

              Roger,

Did you forget that this is what I did! The Howell has worked great, passed smog, and other than a small cold start issue (running rich, need to change the chip) it has worked great. I have not stalled once regardless of the angle or situation.

I'll be leaving here at 7:45am, see you guys soon. Remind me to show the Howell to you this morning.

              Mitch

A friend here in California installed the Howell TBI injection kit onto his 4.2L YJ and both his performance and fuel economy jumped dramatically. It's also CARB approved and he had no problems with the smog test.
