  • Jeep Tools

I'm trying to put together a good set of tools for the Jeep and was hoping for some input as far as what I need, what I don't, and the best way to store it all. I've already broken the handle on my new box lugging it in and out of the Jeep and am looking to eliminate some of the unnessesary weight and find a way to store it all so I can just leave it in the Jeep. I was thinking I'd get something small to hold the basics that I need every time I wheel like deflators, gauge, pliers, rubber mallot, etc that I can just keep behind the seat and then I can strap or mount the rest of the tools that I'll need in case any :poop: goes down! Seems like a lot of the extra weight is wrenches and sockets that I'm not even sure I need . . . is there a list of sizes that the Jeep uses somewhere?
That which does not kill me postpones the inevitable.

Id reccomend going to HF and picking up sae/met 3/8 sockets and wrenches along with some screwdrivers pliers etc. Personally I carry way to many tools but you never know what youll need or what you may need to loan out. Just my .02

Lowe's had a tool kit on sale that would eliminate a lot of crape from you tool box. they had some rachets that were open at the top so you don't need deep sockets. there are a lot of tool out there decide whats best for you then add some more.

No, just kidding. I have a cheapo chinese tool set I got at Kragen. It is the handiest damn thing I've ever had. Sockets, screwdrivers, wrenches, all sorts of junk. It has a plastic molded case with a handle. I just bungee the handle to my case of straps and my case of recovery/survival gear and I'm good to go!

Like Tomb Raider, I have 2 bags. One for the more common tools, one for the not so common (spindle nut socket, breaker bar, torx, etc.) I store them while off-roading in the space between the passenger seat and the side of the Jeep. I use a carabiner to attach them to the seat riser, so they don't fly around.

Before my Jeep...I had nothing (ok, maybe a screwdriver or something). I currently carry just about all my tools. I work on my Jeep (at home) with the tools I carry on the trail. IF I need something I don't have in the bag, I buy it, and put it in the bag!

Oh yeah, I forgot...I also bought an air impact wrench with impact sockets to carry on the trail and run off my CO2 tank...for those tough bolts!

Now we can say "Let's not go to that other tools thread. Let's go to the good tools thread."

                  It's all about the options...

That was some great info. I'm a firm believer in being ready for almost anything. I carry to much. I ended up with one of these.

Fits perfect in the back of my CJ.
I filled it with several of the items listed in the post. I also found a great tool kit at Costco with all the basic sockets, pliers etc in a nice carrying case.
                        Check out .

                          Schmo,
I am not sure about whether newer Jeeps use torx bolts or not, but I bought a set of torx sockets, I got them at Harbor Freight and they were very cheap, like maybe $9.95 for the complete set. Since I don't make a living with mechanics tools, these have done fine for me.

Along with tools you may want to carry some extra parts. I have an older Jeep so I carry a set of used but clean spark plugs, vacuum hose, hose clamps, bailing wire, aircraft alum tape, extra oil & anti-freeze. I like to think I'm bringing these items along also in case someone else in the group needs help. Maybe someone will have something that I may need. . .

Like most I carry a fair assortment of tools, but don't forget (if you're like me and not a mechanic) how handy a service manual for your yr model jeep can be; I always have mine somewhere in a tool bag. It's like a college text book in size, but it has just about everything in it that you might need to know.
