  • Oil Gauge is Crazy???

Please help. My oil gauge has always read about dead center (40) when its on. Recently, i noticed it jumps to 80 (max) when i accelerate. Then when i stop it goes back down to 40. Do you guys know why its doing that.

Ive checked all fluids and is normal. Is this a bad sign to come?

    Thanks

It is perfectly normal for oil pressure to rise and fall in step with engine RPMs. 80 psi is pretty high but if you're accelerating hard and your RPMs are high, that's not all that out of line. Afterall, the oil pump is mechanically driven by the engine so the faster the engine turns over, the faster/harder the oil pump is pumping.

How long has it been since you changed the oil filter?

Mine did that too a few times (pegged) but as soon as I cycled the power it would stop. There is a gauge test you can preform, same as the error test. Turn the key on while holding the trip meter knob down or something like that. I haven't done anything about it and the gauge hasn't done it in quite a while. Probably nothing buy do keep an eye on it.

Thanks guys. I'm taking it in for a tune up and to have everything checked out on it. I hope its all fine.

You can put a mechanical gauge in place of the oil pressure sender, and see exactly what the pressure is. I am sure that is ok, you could have a oil pressure sender that is malfunctioning. I dont think a tune-up is going to solve that particular issue.

The oil pump has an interal pressure relief valve. If your oil is cold or you put in a heavier weight oil the relief valve reacts slower. Or as stated engine rpms will do the same.

There is also a oil filter bypass, if the filter gets plugged the engine stills gets oil.

I have seen engine oil filters blow apart due to both relief valves failing due to lack of oil changes, or engine excessive wear.

1)This will show up in the oil change, let the oil set in the drain pan, heavies set on bottom of the pan, slowly pour the oil in another container. What your looking for is any that does not look like oil.

2)The other thing you can do is cut apart your oil filter and pull the elemnts apart, there should not be anything other than oil.

Check your wiring, to and from, the pressure sending unit, bad connection will drive you nuts!
