    Exhaust System Replacement

    My last trip to Calico left me with a carnage grenade. It didn't go off until last Tuesday. I knew I smacked the muffler and everything else on my undercarriage(thanks guys ) but I thought I got off scott-free this time around... WRONG! I was driving home from the office on the freeway with no bumps or rough road to speak of and I heard a rattle coming from under the passenger seat. I thought it was a loose seat mounting bolt or something. It started getting louder and louder until I sounded like a ricer honda with a coffee can muffler. I thought I shattered the cat grid, but no.




    Of the 2 dents I put in the muffler, one of them pierced the metal in a very critical spot. The weight of the exhaust system flexed it until the metal fatigued. Here's the good part(HRMPH!), the PO welded the system. Totally pwnd.


    Good thing I have a Sawzall. How scary is it that a Sawzall is one of my most used tools for the Jeep.


    Here it is out of the Jeep.


    I took out the cat too. Rather unremarkable procedure. I was able to get it out without taking off the skid. Right now, I'm just killing time, waiting for the UPS fairy. Any minute now, I should have a new Magnaflow cat and a Dynomax Super Turbo catback exhaust and a bunch of extra clamps and hangers. Come on UPS!!!

    Oh, sorry for the head tilt. I'm not sure why photobucket is insisting on portrait. The pics were taken as landscape and display as such. I'll try to fix it. EDIT- Fixed

      This system went in SO EASY!!! I didn't have to cut anything. I did notch the cat so it would line up to the bump in the downtube but even that is optional. The cat is longer than stock and the muffler is shorter than stock. All the pieces slide deep into each other so adjustment is just a matter of pushing things around and clamping them down. I installed the cat upside down. There is this shield that comes off the unit to keep the floorboard heat down. I'd rather have that piece act as a skid for flying rocks and gravel. I don't know if that was the right thing to do but it seemed like a good idea to me.




      The exhaust note is deeper but just slightly. I think the metal throughout is thicker. The exhaust gasses coming out the tailpipe are super hot! I had to pull my hand away. I guess the new system is insulated better than the old one. At the tip, they welded on a polished stainless end piece that actually looks really good. Normally, I hate exhaust tips but this one I can live with. It's just a slant cut shotgun style.

            The one I took off sure had muffler bearings. When I tilted it from one end to the other, it sounded like a friggin rainstick!

                Quadratec. This is the first time I've ordered from them and NOT had anything backordered. It was just over $300 for everything from the downtube back including tax and shipping.

                  yeah i do alot of mudding so the exhaust really takes a beating, i lost the muffler on a road allowence last year, well actually i lost everything from the cat back. when through i mud puddle with it on, came out and it was gone.

                    You blew 3 mounts and a clamp and managed to get all of it around the axle??? Must have been one heck of a mud puddle.
