You can get a TJ with stuff already on it for about that price is you really do your homework and scour all sources.

You can get a CJ or YJ and do just about anything you want to it for $8,000. I'd go that route because once you lift it, you'll find you need a lot more stuff. More than you'd think.

I agree, there are alot of good used ones you can find for 3000-5000 and the left over will go along way to really build it up the way you want.

i agree, go with a good condition YJ. cheaper to buy and cheaper to build up than a TJ. remember jeeps will pretty much last forever, as long as the engine is solid and the frame isn't rusted out. most major components can be replaced for less than $500

a few tips, although some of the YJ guys might disagree or give you better ones:
          1. make sure you get one with a solid engine/tranny that has been serviced.
          2. i'd recommend an automatic tranny, many reasons for this but the foremost being that a good setup with stickshift will cost you several thousand out of the gate or you'll be blowing clutches like nothing else and stalling all over the place on rocks
          3. try to get 4.10 axle gears (only 4-cylinder?)
          4. try to get a non c-clip rear axle (only 87-89?)

I think the 6-cylinder from 87-89 or 91 was the old AMC 4.2L and didn't have a lot of power, but I could be mistaken...someone might want to chime in.

let us know if you need any more help, lots of guys on here run YJ's and can answer more detailed questions than I can even begin to.

good luck, and wise choice asking first before you buy the wrong jeep for your needs
          03 TJ. It'll go 65mph...can't complain.

Get a low mile or lower mile 4.0 YJ .... Put most of the money in savings! Wheel the piss out of it and find out what you really like. Then pull that money out and build the monster suited to what you really want to do!

Agree. YJ. Mine has 130K+ and still runs strong. I've had very little trouble with it and it's been good to me. I don't have to worry about the inside getting dirty 'cause there really isn't much to it.

I'll second that agreement! My old YJ had 160K miles on it before the crankshaft position sensor went out (I REALLY should have replaced it instead of selling the jeep...but the tranny leaked oil from my mistake when I installed it.) anyway, The YJ is a good jeep, although I'd get one that is built after 1992 because of the sport bars...Anything before that and your passenger won't have that nice bit of protection in a roll over.

The TJ's ride much nicer than the YJ's, but you're 19...and your kidneys aren't as sensitive as the old farts on this forum. (Sorry guys I had to say it)

I got my YJ (4cyl) for $1500 and sold it for $1200 a year later. The 6cyl YJ will cost you around $3K to $5k depending on the year, mileage, and what's been upgraded.

Or you could say the heck with the SWB and go LWB....like me! I got a grocery getter XJ on 29's (Not a lot of tire, but they get me where I wanna go) and a 4.0 HO that will keep up with my dad's TJ on 31's and an 8000Lb winch anywhere we've been so far!

But, whatever you decide to get...it'll rock...unless you buy a compass...they suck.

YJ all the way! 91 or newer, 4.0 look for a D44 rear axle, it has the diff cover with flat spots, the perfect oval is a D35, x2 on the Auto tranny.
