  • Powder coat, or paint...Rocker guards?

I wont be using them to pivot on, there just "insurance". Cost for P coating rockers? Or paint (epoxy?) There just flat side rockers,no tube.(Rokmen).

There's a place by my house in Fullerton that powder coats for cheap. At work we took a drinking fountain that had several pieces they had to dissasemble and they charged us $50. One benefit to paint is how easy it is to touch up!
    WILL WORK FOR JEEP PARTS!!!

Thats what you say now. Trust me they will get dingged up. I vote paint, 1 can $5 and its really easy to touch it up.

You'd be amazed at the difference in toughness between paint and powdercoating. Since they're going to take a beating just from rocks and gravel on the freeway, you should probably go with powdercoating anyway.

Powdercoat will scratch off just like paint against a rock. Its tougher but not that much...

Yea, no tube...The price was right,Im 6'3", no prob. getting in, and the PRICE WAS RIGHT. I dont forsee myself really doing any hardcore crawling, just old mining trails in the Mojave. So, is there a big advantage to powder coat? $80.OO for the pair I can do, I just want the most bang for the buck.

                  Dave,

Not to hijack, but you need to check out "Marine Corps Base Plans" under the "Land Use" forum. In your situation the powder coating will work good on the rockers. They will look good and won't get beat up enough to worry about.

I dont quite understand the proposed land grab map, Mitch.(No mines on it), but Im sure its in our newfound playground. As a former active Marine from that Base, I protest! And I will defend said wheeling land with one of my non painted, Rokmen rocker guards!(Took the thread back, huh,Mitch!)

x2 powder coating isn't a magic little forcefield.

personally, i'd vote for paint just because when you do end up whacking them good and they scratch, you can "rattle can" your way to a like-new finish.

If the OP didn't make it a habit of scratching all the coating off of it on rocks, it will last longer as a protective finish. I rub a lot of things that aren't boulders. Branches will scratch through paint and not powdercoating. Gravel will scratch through paint and not powdercoating. Sand will scratch through paint and not powdercoating.

For rocker guards, I'd not pay extra for powder coating unless the little darlings are there only for looks. If they're going to be used on the trail where they will encounter rocks or other hard objects, powder coating won't hold up any better than paint will. You can touch up either with satin black Rustoleum, so why pay extra for powder coating?

my powder coating has held up to alot of impacts and scrapes only to scuff the coating and i buff them out.... but at the same time i see powdercoating chip easy on others.... is their a big diff in the quality out their? like the thickness? alot of shops i know reuse the powder that did not grab the first time... i only know that cuz my powder shop told me about how they only use fresh coating and dispose of the rest?

Just a thought, and it may be a stupid one, bed liner coating? Would it peel off on impact? Too thick to use on the inside of the rocker to get a good fit to the tub? I may have just answered my own questions....
