  • Wheel Bearing Adjust

I'm a bit confused regarding the proper method to adjust the front wheel bearings on my 1974 CJ5. The factory manual says to tighten the adjustment nut until the wheel "binds." (This is purely arbitrary depending on the individual doing the tightening.) Then the manual says to "back off one sixth of a turn." Again, vague.

Is there a recommended torque rating one can apply when adjusting the front wheel bearing to get you in the ball park? :dunno:

Isn't it secured with a cottor pin? I'd spin the hub, or have someone else spin it while you tighten the nut until it binds/ or to not over 50'lbs, then back it off to the next key-slott or until it's smooth. If the hub is spining, you should know when it binds.
