I think the problem is finding a good camera that will be useful. Under the jeep, the camera has to be able to deal with very big contrast changes frequently (need a large dynamic range)... during day-time driving, the underside of the jeep in the shade will be much darker than the bright areas around it (due to Sun). So most of the time, the camera (especially cheaper CMOS imagers) will be scrambling to compensate and drive themselves crazy
The other problem is finding a camera with a wide enough field of view to see anything meaningful down there. Otherwise, it'll either be pointing to a very small place or easily be blocked out by obstacles...
Keeping the lense clean is another issue.
The last but not least problem is finding LCD screens bright enough to be useful in top-down conditions (if the jeep willl be driven top-down). I don't know of any (at least affordable) screens that are visible in sun-light. Having them withstand the elements is another issue. The screens might get permanently damaged in direct (prolonged) sunlight in the summer.
But I have to say as far as the coolness factor, that setup is very sweet.

I had no idea Chris had done that. That's awesome! The cameras looks to be pretty decent too from the pictures ... leave it to Chris to find a perfectly tuned set of cameras for his rig
When I bought the jeep, I swore to myself I wasn't going to do anything stupid with the electonics. Only a CB, dual battery system and lights (as many lights as I want). So far, I've been pretty good with sticking to that rule. But with cameras, screens, GPSes, laptops, and other crap getting so cheap these days, it's getting harder and harder to not do anything

Ok let's not dig up old stories Brian, if you do, I might reveal something about your C/C++ endeavors

Endeavors? Is that what you call that crap???? I call it a royal pain in the ASS!!!!! But hey, at least I found that stupid ";" that I put at the end of the fuggin "if" statement in that last program I sent you...I can't tell you how many times I worked through those three nested statements in my head, trying to figure out why it would always run through the three strcpy statements, even when the if statement was false (in which case it should have done nothing)...let's just say that the bottle of rum took the majority of the abuse.....
But speaking of royal pains in the ass....guess what I get to write tonight? Yup...another damn program......:poop:
olllllllo <--- If you can read that, roll me over!
well, it works very well, I have 4 cameras that will show all areas from under the Jeep, I am also adding a camera that pops out from the passenger side fender near the door - when coming close to those rocks- I hit a switch and there is the right side of the Jeep on the video screen. done- flip the switch and the door closes and seals the camera safely inside the fender.
Got 3 different types of cameras to see which works best.
Kick in the ass.
Can even use the screen instead of the rear view mirror.
