  • Suck down winch

Started another project. After being denied entry up a water fall at Superstition and having fellow jeepers say my front end was pretty much weightless I've decided to get a suck down winch. Did a little research and decided that I like Stu Olsen's setup so I'm gonna pretty much backward engineer his idea.
I bought a 2500 lb ATV winch on ebay for about 160 bucks and a 1'x1' sheet of 1/4" plate which is a bit overkill but better than under I guess. Had a really hard time sourcing a strong/low profile pulley but found it here http://www.e-rigging.com/three-eight...FcNffgoduk4AkQ . Finished up the brackets today and well get it welded up in the next few days hopefully.

Cool, I've been messing around with one of those for a while just never committed.
Can't wait to hear how it does when you get it all installed. More pics please.
You can lead a horse to water, but it might drown

I'll get this project finished this week since I need it for this wknd. I ditched the bolt and sleeve setup that I was gonna use and sourced a 3 1/2" stainless steel 1850 lb synth rope sheave w/a 7/8 bolt hole. Should help the winch out a lot and keep the line true. Just need to fab up some tabs and an anchor point on the driver side.

So today I pretty much finished up the project. Have to do some very minor things tomorrow due to time restraints today but it's 99% done..

cable broke. I think it freyed on the fairlead and worked it self to failure. Gonna try a different approach. Also that particular winch (with a dynamic brake) didnt seem to hold up. I kept having to feed the line in. The brake slips. Good news is that I managed to still get up that damn waterfall. The line was to ride the wall on the left but it wasn't gonna be had with a tj or yj in the mid 90 wheel base range so I took the right side which could of proven very bad. Made about 6 attempts then they tried to pull out the winch line and I said F that!.. Kept trying. Then the suck down line failed. Kept trying then I went up, both wheels got about 3 ft off the ground it shifted hard to the left, dug in and I pulled right up.....
NO DAMN PICTURES EITHER! I think everyone gave up once they tried to pull the winch line out and put their camera's down... Oh well I know I did it! It's time for a 6" stretch

I used a harbor freight winch that cost 40 bucks used the steel cable, broke it once bouncing the front end. It works pretty well when I used it.
Gonna use the same for my buggy. Still in the end good suspension geometry and a wheelbase stretch is a better approach, lopt more work, but well worth it in the end

I did the same thing except I used a Warn I found on Craigslist for cheap. The brake holds really well and I haven't had any problems using just the steel cable that came on it even with bouncing.

forgot about this lil video I made when I first installed the set up. Gonna buy another winch . Looking at a 3000 lb Warn winch with steel line this time. The set up worked great until it didn't. Also have to address my anti rock wacking into it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XlEosiIC1Kg

Just curious. Why not set up your front winch to reach down to the front axle, and use that as your suck down?
It was like that when I got here.
