  • cutting, grinding, welding... some XJ fab

So Ive been working with the guys at Fabtech fabrication in chatsworth for a few weeks and designing and building some armor and other stuff for my XJ. They did some amazing work. Took my ideas and made it better.

For years Ive been wheeling without a gas tank skid plate. Ran the Rubicon twice and wheeled the hammers countless number of times. Ive been risking a gas tank puncture and my only solution for so long has been to carry alot of jb weld and many other sealants in case of an emergency. Ive been very lucky, never got in that situation. The reason for not having a skid plate is nobody made a nice unit that worked with a Rigid-Co bumper, since they use such a complex mounting design. If a company makes it now, im not aware as i stopped researching it about a year ago.

Second, we built a nice TC skid plate since im now running the Clayton cross member.

and lastly I desperately needed rear bump-stops. Running 36" tires, its hard to keep them out of the fenders. We came up with a solution(I hope)

Some pictures of the end product.

    no gas tank skid

Instead of building a skid and losing ground clearance, i decided it was time to move the factory tank up. We dropped the tank, cut a hole in the floor and modified the factory straps to hold the tank in place. I also decided i wanted to put my spare on top of the tank, so we built a cage to protect the tank and made sure it would be strong enough to hold my spare.

    had to relocate the filler

reinstalled the tank. Plenty of clearance now.

Now needed a cross member across the tank to add a skid too. We put 3 threaded inserts in the cross member.

It attaches to the bumper mount and can easily be removed in case i need to drop the tank.

      From the top

Once we had that figured out, we moved on to building the skid plate.
What the guys came up with.

The skid plate bolts to the cross member and we welded some tabs off the inside of the rear bumper with welded nuts on top.

Now time for the bump stops. I ordered the cans from poly performance and got the synergy gusset kit. I really wanted to have the stops land on the axle instead of the leaf spring and so to do that, we had to cut into the floor and plate the unibody to take the impact.

The shop had some spring perches laying around so we modified those and made a landing pad.

I went with the daystar bump-stops. Felt they were enough for my needs. Don't really do the go fast stuff so no need for Kings or FOAs etc...

Tire in its place. Strapped down with a poly performance 3point tire strap.

I'm done for a while. Ready to go wheeling :cocktail:

Thats some nice work. Holes and dimple dies, make skids look so much better. Those sure are some pur-dy welds too.
It was like that when I got here.

I assume you are familiar with Richard Gauthier.....on their KOH XJ they bent their axle housing due to the bump stop location. You say you are not going to be a go fast kind of guy, but things happen when the guy next to you hits the gas pedal..........I am sure you can look up their KOH experience on NAXJA.

Yes, im familiar with Richard, Cal and their RACE experience. They built that XJ to race the hell out of, compete and try to win. They also used a XJ D44. I dont do any high speed stuff no matter what the person next to me is doing and my rear end is a "little" stronger then a dana44.

When I saw the bump stop, I thought I would pass along some info. Yes, they planned to drive to win. S.... happened along the way.

                  Nice build, by the way.

Do you have a link to the parts you used for the rear bumps as far as the cans and the daystar bumps? I looked for them buti wasunable to find them. Nice work by the way. Are you leaving the tank as is or will you end up building some type of enclosure for it.

Just finished painting everything. Used Rustoleum hammered silver.

No floor for the tank. Stays as is.

Welded some bolts to the rear of the cage and mounted the hi lift.
