CJ7 Roll Cage

I have an 84 CJ7 that my sons and I have been building for 3 years now, we have gone through the axles, transmission, transfer case, suspension, steering, and bumpers. Last April my son rolled his 77CJ5 breaking his back in four places (he's doing great and is back to work). All I have in my CJ7 is the factory roll bar.

I got a JD2 bender for Christmas this year and am looking for suggestions on cage designs and for those of you have built or purchased one, what would you do differently if you could.

Any input would be helpful.

I didn't build mine but I really like the way that my Rock Hard cage is built. Fortunately I have not had to test it yet. Mine is simular to this.

Thanks for the photo, it is pretty close to what I have in mind except for more triangulation on the top.

Thanks Chuck. It's the one thing on my Jeep I hope I NEVER have to use!

Unfortunately for cweed, my cage is a kit for a TJ, however maybe some ideas can be "borrowed" in the design of one for his CJ.

I'm very happy with the look/feel of my cage. I still haven't done padding, although that will be happening very soon. I bought the padding from Jegs and am going to have some help sewing fabric so the padding isn't simply zip-tied to the cage. It will have a better "factory" look and feel.

Thank you for all the pic's and comments. The major issues I wanted to cover was strength first (have two kids)then functionality. The down tube on the front hoop on all the CJ cages I have seen get in the way of the door opening and e-brake. I have my own design in this are that like the YJ and TJ attaches to the dash and has a tube running behind the door jam to the frame.

In everyones reply on the different sights I paid a lot of attention to triangulation, frame mounting ideas, hand holds, and other like items. I'll be starting the cage build this next month. Wanted to practice on tube fenders for my sons and my jeep before the cage (new bender and all)

The down tube on the front hoop on all the CJ cages I have seen get in the way of the door opening and e-brake.

That's not the case with Rock Hard. The bar attaches to the front and rear of the dash keeping the down tube behind the dash and away from the e-brake and doors.

That is exactly one of the biggest features I have been looking for. This looks really good, no knee knocking (hurts when you older) and the e-brake pedal is still usable.
