  • Electric Trailer Brakes (HELP)

I'm set up the trailer brakes and I'm corn fused... On the brake backing plates are two wires both the same in color one with a stripe (I assume to be positive) the other ground. the brake control module shows normal operation. I don't have any brakes. I checked for power and its there. Anyone have any ideas? Brakes are new.

Is the brake controller activating the mangnets?
If so it should work if not see if one of the 2 wires on the mangnets gets hot when you step on the brakes and or push the button on the controller. If no power check at the trailer plug if there is power there You should get a signal/ power for the brakelights and a seperate source of power for the brake mangnets

      Brakes

Do the brake lights on the trailer come on when the pedal is pressed (plugged into the tow vehicle of course)? A poor ground causes a lot of problems on trailers.

The light come on. I've tested the wire at the brakes as well. All is good. gave up last night and about to try again today.

The mangnets don't seem to be doing anything. I'll check the wires for heat. I've got power to the brakes (test light)

The brake lights have seperate feed from the electric trailer brakes
If it's all wired properly you should have 2 wires get hot at the trailer plug when you step on the brakes

Both have power. The magenet is getting power, but doesn't move the brake shoes

it will not move the brake shoes until the wheels turn. the mangnet has friction material on it so when they get hot they will stick to the inside face of the drum from there the friction material will cause drag on the drum and them the rotation of the drum will start applying the brakes. Good ground connection between the trailer and the tow vehicle is important also

I thought that's what it's supposted to do. Seem that the discription of the backing plate installation is backwards to the rotation. Left is Driver/ Right is Passenger, but the arm to the magenet is to the front of the drum. so the magenet would have to push into the forward rotation on the wheel.

If I am not mistaken the arms go towards the back of the brake setup that way when the wheel rotates the magnet gets pushed backward moving the arm and applying the brakes

That would make sence. I'll try spinning the wheel in reverse to see if there is any difference.
