  • Hand Throttle

I put together a hand throttle as a weekend project. I really could have used one last time I went to Calico. I think I only stalled once, but I was definitely jarring the drivetrain a little too hard when I lost momentum. The whole foot shuffle thing on a steep incline aint easy! The Rubicon Express hand throttle kit was backordered for at least 3 weeks from RE. Quadratec had a few but they said it would take 7-10 business days. Experience tells me that means 3 weeks. I found all the parts I needed at a local bike shop, Ace Hardware and Lowe's. I spent about $35 for parts. I got an assortment of clips, springs and odds and ends because I wasn't sure what I would need.

I secured it to the shifter with double-sticky foam tape. About 5 wraps.

I used some sort of aluminum bike bracket to secure it to the throttle cable housing. It just snapped together. I preloaded it with a spring so I wouldn't have any trouble with a sticking throttle. I trapped a ball chain retainer between two cable narps(hehe, narp, narp). I ran a length of ball chain to the throttle body and secured it with an electrical lug and a wire snap clip.

Here's WOT. No binding, catching, rubbing, nothing!

I ran the cable against the shifter, through the boot and right out the bottom. I followed a section of wiring harness up the firewall and zip-tied it. It's clear of anything moving or hot.

I ran the ball chain a little long on purpose. I removed ball pieces until I found a comfortable compromise between low idle and high RPMs when I pull the lever. I can fine tune it with the adjusters on the ends.

There's only about 1/8" of slack in there. I was able to adjust it down pretty far. When I hit dirt, I can take away all the slack and even raise the idle RPM from inside the cab if I need to.

After a test drive, I realized the foam tape wasn't going to cut it. It flexed. I set the preload pretty heavy, so it takes some pull to use the lever. I maxed out the lever and the RPMs only went up a little. I fixed it with a section of heater hose. It was a VERY tight fit. I had to clamp it with vice grips before I could get the retaining bolt in. Much better! The base didn't budge when I pulled back. I drove it around through the hills using just the hand throttle. It's a little jumpy but it feels pretty good. This may solve the right-foot-falling-asleep issue on long drives. Ghetto cruise control I guess.

Looks great, and easy to repair if something goes wrong. Am I right in guessing that the Hand Throttle is mainly for manual trans? Ive heard of alot of people running them just never seen one.

It pretty much just keeps you from stalling or jarring your drivetrane on inclines. Rolling backwards isn't a good thing when you're switching from the brake to gas with your right foot. I can't see a use for it if you don't have a manual tranny.

            Awesome

Awesome!!! Thank's for another great Idea! I've been looking at doing this for some time now and just never had the right Ideas! This looks easy and it would help me out alot! If you don't mind, I might PM you for some of the more technical stuff like getting the RPM thing dialed in!

No sweat. The install took me about a half hour. Dialing it in took me 2 hours.

cool. I bought one of these a couple months ago and didn't put it on because of the cruise control was in the way. but the more I think of it I will install this week. thanks for the motivation

I have a hand throttle and a manual, but I can think of a very good use for people w/ autos. When winching, or using a belt-driven OBA you may want to easily keep the RPMs up at a certain RPM. Enter a hand throttle.

That's true! You may be better off with the original style though. The gear shift type as opposed to the hand brake. Those things can lock and unlock pretty easily. I had one in my hand at the bike shop, but decided the hand brake style just looked cooler.

Tomb Raider- that little part I used is a brake cable retainer for fixed front brakes on a mountain bike(arms attached to the forks, not caliper style). It is exactly the right size hole and thickness to fit the throttle cable bracket. If you used that piece like I did, you can leave your cruise control cable in place. If you go to Calico this weekend, you can try it out.

Ok I got mine done today. was pretty straight forward. The teraflex kit sucks along with the directions. But figured it out. A few extra parts, that don't seem to go anywhere.

Anyways question is how much play should you leave in it? I left quite a bit. But it does rev and max out. And the lever comes too close to the panel.

I had my first test of the hand throttle at IDTT this weekend. It worked great! The biggest problem I had with it was forgetting I had it there. I just got used to the 3 pedal shuffle. I had a hard time hanging out the window to check my line and reaching the hand throttle at the same time. It's set for sitting square in the drivers seat. That's one place where a gear shifter style has my brake lever style beat. I don't know, I may just need some more seat time with it.

Hey Shad it didn't look like you had a bit of trouble with it from my view. It was great running with ya and wish we could have been there Sun

When you don't have cruise control, the hand throttle helps to relieve your foot for a little while on a long trip.
