Not to worried about the side markers. Per code they can be reflectors, but thats just a fixit ticket. The real problem is no tag light until the bolts with the lights show up. also no back up lights. LOL not too worried about it.

lite n bolts. they work great. thats what i got for my solution. by the way.. hurry up and finish it already... im curious as well. im wondering if my lil 120 wire feed mig can do the same as what your up to. i just made a hoist for a 600 lb turbine jet at school and it held. pretty sure it would hold for a 50 lb tire/rim combo.

should be fine. get good penetration and you will be fine. i used a 120 MiG for mine without any problems.

I have one of those too and I wouldn't dare use it on those joints. The plate is too thick. Your welder might be of better quality than mine, but I think I'd feel safer heading over to Harbor Freight and picking up one of their super-cheap 220V arc welders for something like that. I know my MIG welds would hold the weight, but it wouldn't hold up to the constant flexing and bouncing or ANY sort of impact. I'd want a complete melt instead of just a bunch of tacks. It would really suck to have to take all that apart to re-weld and re-paint. I foolishly attempted to MIG weld the mounts on my 8.8 when I installed that. I thought I could just hold it there and build up a nice, hot, messy puddle. I was wrong. Booger city. I had to borow an arc welder.

I personally feel that you used to beefy of a plate. you dont need that thick of a plate. i already have corners on my TJ as well. im thinking about bolting the plate to the body with 3/16 plate, bolting the hinge plates with flush headed allen bolts and welding it up as well. the tubing for the actual carrier will be of 3/16 2x2 square tubing at the thickest. ive welded many 3/16 tubes w/my 120. its not a daily driver and will only fail on me on the trail so im not to worried. cant wait to see your finished product..

What kind of welders do you guys have? Mine is a Chicago Electric 120v MIG. I use .035 flux core or .030 steel with Argon/CO2 for the cleaner welds. I can't seem to get good penetration on anything over 1/8". Works great for sheet metal repair and spot welds, but doesn't do squat for anything frame related. I know this welder is tecnically supposed to handle 1/4" plate(according to the chart and manual), but it doesn't.

He can be. He gets running fits in the house like a small dog. sounds like a herd of bufflo when he comes running down the hall. I have a Lincoln 220 stick welder. In all honesty I had the guys at work do the welds for the plates because Im not that good at it yet. It was more of a safety thing(I would feel really bad hurting someone if it were to fall of on the highway.

I was really looking to see how well I could build it and still keep the price down. My buddy put the corner guards from warrior on his YJ and it just didn't feel sturdy enough to support the weight(kinda like just bolting it to the body panel)the weight is not much diffrent then lighter gage plate. I was going to use the 2 in square tubing for the rack but insted I am using 1 3/4 round tube .120 wall.
