I'm forgetful sometimes(most times) and I tend to leave my headlights on whenever I use them in the daytime. I know the obvious answer is to not use them in the daytime, but certain situations call for it. I would like to build a noisemaker of some kind that will remind me to turn off my lights when I take the key out of the ignition. Is there some kind of relay I can use that is an open circuit when power is applied and a closed circuit when the power is cut off? You know, backwards from a normal relay. I'd prefer not to have the headlights themselves pass through a relay of any kind.

McMaster Carr has some 12 volt two pole relays one normally open and one normally closed. You can use one of those. Wire the coil to the ignition and a power lead from the light switch through the normally closed contact to a buzzer.
The relay would be closed with the engine off and the buzzer would sound if the lights were on. The relay would open with the engine on disabling the buzzer. McMaster Carr has a web site as well. Just google McMaster Carr.

I got it. It's REALLY small.
Install took about 5 minutes. I mounted it using the clips and tape. I could have mounted it using rivets or screws and soldered splices if I wanted a permanent solution. I'll do that if I ever need to replace the wiring harness. It's very easily removable if there is ever a problem.
The sound it makes is very similar to the warning buzzer on a Chrysler car. I can deal with that."The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money."
