no it is recessed in the dash so there is more room there then it looks. i have a friend that's 6'2 and he has never hit his knees. besides it not in my way.

I'm surprised your dash can support that sucker. It's what, 50lbs?

if you like that the center console is also a safe. i put my ammo in there, and on top is a can cooler heater, makes life nice on the trail. you just grab a soda, that is ice cold.

You keep a gun in your Jeep in California? Is that legal in this hippie anti-gun state?

no i only put them in the safe when i go to shoot them. and the ammo is in the center consul safe. i find it to be better than having a gun in a jeep so any yahoo can get to it.

You might want to be real careful on your first traffic stop if you've got a weapon in that - I doubt very seriously it meets CPC 12026.1

i only carry an gun when i go to shoot. it is never loaded and the ammo is in a separate location locked up. the only way it would be a problem is if it was loaded and i didnt tell the officer it was there. but don't get me wrong i mainly use it as a glove box that is secure. so that thieves cant steel my stuff. the box is not mainly for my guns, it is a glove box.

Basically, 12026.1 prohibits keeping the "concealable weapon" within reach - loaded or not.

                        Here's the text:

12026.1. (a) Section 12025 shall not be construed to prohibit any
citizen of the United States over the age of 18 years who resides or
is temporarily within this state, and who is not within the excepted
classes prescribed by Section 12021 or 12021.1 of this code or
Section 8100 or 8103 of the Welfare and Institutions Code, from
transporting or carrying any pistol, revolver, or other firearm
capable of being concealed upon the person, provided that the
                        following applies to the firearm:
                        (1) The firearm is within a motor vehicle and it is locked in the
vehicle's trunk or in a locked container in the vehicle other than
                        the utility or glove compartment.
                        (2) The firearm is carried by the person directly to or from any
motor vehicle for any lawful purpose and, while carrying the firearm,
the firearm is contained within a locked container.
                        (b) The provisions of this section do not prohibit or limit the
otherwise lawful carrying or transportation of any pistol, revolver,
or other firearm capable of being concealed upon the person in
                        accordance with this chapter.
                        (c) As used in this section, "locked container" means a secure
container which is fully enclosed and locked by a padlock, key lock,
combination lock, or similar locking device.

sounds like the safe you have is the best way to go. it is not a glove box, and meets the locking mechanism requirement.

                            I'd say he's good-to-go. I think the "other than
the utility or glove compartment" intent is due to those items NORMALLY being easily pried open with a screwdriver even if locked. Pretty sure his 'box' doesn't open with a screwdriver.
