  • I don't know nuthin...

our beloved CJ doesn't seem to like shifting gears... I'd bet my shoes that the trans is stock, however I have no idea what has happened to it or with it in the last 20+years.
I know that last it was used the trans worked ok, but has been sitting for about a year and a half.
I don't know if it will shift better once it's moving (can't move it untill the brake line is fixed). I'm expecting to need a new trans soon, but any ideas to get it to work for a little bit?
the only things I can think are that once it's moving it will shift better, or that I have to put in some transmition fluid (any tips on how to do THAT would be great!)

    YOU THOUGHTS?!?!

Don't know what CJ you have, but if its the T5, on the passenger side you will see a drain plug, and a few inches above that will be the fill plug. Drain the fluid, and then refill and see what happens.

Is your linkage all connected? If it wasn't there wouldn't be much resistance when you pressed the clutch pedal. I would think that if you rocked it as you tried to shift it, it would come free.

I know its not much help...but good luck

In my experience when a manual gearbox accumulates miles the synchro rings wear out first. When this happens shifting gets harder because the gears tend to crunch into each other, especially if you try to shift fast.

I have had good luck using Red Line MTL (manual transmission lubricant) apparently Red Line formulate it to have properties which allow worn out synchro rings to work properly.

If this sounds like your prob, try MTL.

        It's an 84 cj7.
Thanks for the advice, I've never messed with trans fluid before so both instruction and product are a great help.
as for resistance on the clutch, everything feels normal, I just can't pull it out of third, really the only reason it was in third is to keep it from rolling, I heard that the E-brakes aren't very reliable and have heard stories about it getting stuck. which I don't need.

anyhow, thanks for the help, I'll let you all know how things turn out.
