  • Stripping in the YJ

Figured that title would get more views.

I recently registered the YJ in Michigan and now I'm legal without having to smog it anymore. So, that means it's time to strip the emissions crap off the YJ's I6.

But before I go at it I'm looking for some advice. The reason I want to strip all of that junk off is for more power and improved mileage. In your opinion, will I achieve these things by stripping off the emissions gunk?

Currently I'm getting about 9mpg with the YJ. I'm running 33's, auto tranny & 3.73 gears on it. I know the 33's are sucking up some of my mileage, but I figured I should get better mileage than 9mpg. It's still got the Carter BBS carb on it, but I've gotten it tuned pretty good (I think).

Unfortunately, I didn't torch the engine in the huge sandstorm and wont be buying a new one anytime soon.

Your gears could be holding you back. With lower gears the engine will not have to work so hard and the harder the engine works the worst your fuel economy will be. How fresh is the distributer, cap, rotor, plug wires, plugs, ignition module--hot enough? I would dump a can of Sea Foam down the carburater venture while giving it enough gas to idle and try to choke it enough with the Sea Foam to stall out. Let the engine rest for a little less than five minuites then start it up, it should be a little harder than usual but once it is started give it gas and do not let it die. Put it in gear and drive it keeping it in lower gears and rev it out as much as you are comfortable down the highway is best and you will blow out a whit cloud of smoke carrieng nasty crud out. On the next fill up put a can of Sea Foam or B12 chem tool fuel injector cleaner in the bottom of the gas tank to clean out the jets. The last time I did this on my pickup it wen from running ok to pourly with fuel starvation on hills resulting in pinging from the ultra lean condition but I did not set back the distributer because I had prevously retarded the pings out enough. By the next tank of gas the truck ran much better. It is a 1982 Ford F-150 with 351W and a holley 2 barel with msd. and bosch plugs. Check for vacume leaks and exaust leaks. Is your cat clogged?

I'll have to find some of this Sea Foam stuff. Never put it in my veh's before. Cap, Rotor etc are pretty new to good. Plugs are BRAND new. Wife and I are looking at an HEI Dizzy on eBay for her YJ. I've got one in the CJ already. I'll try the above list of things to do, and hopefully it will free up some mileage. Thanks for the help!

Thinking of getting an HEI from eBay for the YJ. would the nutter bypass still apply if I do?

Once you put the hei in you will not have to do the nutter bypass.
