well i got stuck pretty good yesterday when my 4x4 failed to work. Is this common in a 91 xj ?

The vacuum disconnect axle is the likely cause.
on the passenger side of the axle toward the back is the vacuum motor and on the back of the transfer case is the valve that engages 4x4. It is all connected together with plastic lines that break and/or fall off.

An easy fix to this is a posi-lok, this replaces the vacuum disconect with a cable actuated one, cost os less than $200. I installed one on my YJ and it works great.
