  • 404 'mog axles

Anyone here running 404's? Any known problems, complaints, performance enhancing tips, etc? I am thinking hard about having a set appear in my truck and was hoping for a little first hand experience.

Portal axles in a YJ? 48 inch tires? Wow...

There are some 404s that are better than others. I would head over to Pirate4x4, there is tons of Unimog info there. But make sure you read first. Check out the Mercedes section and the Jeep Hardcore.

If you decide to do this, I hope you like custom fab work, a lot

Your a funny guy, Ron. You know which truck will see these axles. Unless you think it would be better than the 8.8 swap in the YJ?

Not a lot of experience on the welding side, but I was a machinist for a few years so I might be able to come up with a few things. I checked out pirates, wow! Those guys are something else. Lots of good info in there for when I'm ready.

I checked into both currie and dynatrac for a new front axle and was not impressed by the cost. I am sure the quality would be there, but they are both sadly out of my budget. Then I found I can set up a pair of 404's for almost half of what the front axle alone would have been. Makes me a little more inclined to go that way.

Then I can re-gear my 9" and d44 and put them in the YJ....
