  • 97 tj d30 locker?????

hey i have a 97 tj and i want to do a front locker on my jeep. i have a detroit locker and my buddy has a tj that he wants to weld his spider gears together.. is there any reason not to do it.. will that affect the front end as a daily driver.. im not sure i am curious.. i blew my ring and pinion 3 nights ago and since i have my new gears comibng tommarow should i put the locker in or will it make this beast a pain in the but to drive in the street

    Thank would be BAD.
I had a dana 30 in the front of my CJ for years that was welded, but the CJ has front hubs. The TJ would be unturnalble on the street. go with something selectable, OX, air locker, ETC

Putting a detroit in the front will not effect the ride any different while in 2 wd.

          locker

really no difference? so if i even welded the spider gears so have a make shift locker it wont affect it at all? it will act like it does right now being open?

I said puting a Detroit in the front won't make a difference. Welding the spiders is not the same as a Detroit.

what is the difference between them isnt a detriot locker just a built up carrier with it all locked together in a sense.. so welding the spiders gears wont work

a locker has the ability to "let go" so the wheels can turn at different speeds, and you are able to steer. no "differential" in speed between the inside and outside tire equals no good steering..

yea but isnt the point of the locker to not let go.. it is locked would be the key word.. or am i just that lame.. i not a noob but this is somehting that is being commonly mistaked and i couldnt find any threads on this orelse i wouldnt be waisting anybodys time if i did. i have a detroit locker in the rear of my jeep and when i was installing it the mechanisms were solid nothing to alow one wheel to give like an open diff. hense the idea i have to weld the spider gear

this is from the same site, if you search lockers on the web you should find info. Anyway the lock locks, but it has the ability to unlock allowing easy turning. welding does not unlock... Ron

Ford 9" Locker Install (Part 6)

Now reinstall the axles and tighten the flange bolts, install the drums and tires. Just as a test, we spun one wheel and watched the other wheel. With spider gears one wheel will go one way and the other will go the other way. Both wheel now spun the same way; this is a good sign. Now install the drive shaft (keeping the marks lined up). Another test is with the vehicle in neutral, rotate the wheels back and forth. They should randomly unlock and click as the tires move. The is the easy-unlocking characteristic of the Lock-Right
