  • Tranny replacement for 258

My tranny has taken a dump on me. Mainshaft destroyed and my bearings are toast. It was a T-5. I can either rebuild it or look for a better tranny. I was just wondering what your thoughts were on a replacement tranny. I was thinking somewhere along the lines of a T-18. It has to be a manual tranny and a good match to my 258. Any ideas?

I'm in the process of putting a TF999 replacing my T5. So I guess I'm with him too

You can't go wrong with the t-18. Fill it up with some cheap gear lube and it will run forever.
            That's a BIG rock!

Look at Novaks kit for swapping in a New Process 435.When your done it's the same length as your T5 and you can run your current driveshafts.Their adapter is also drilled so you can clock your Dana 300 if so desired.I'm not sure on the T-5 bell housing but I know they have the same bolt pattern as a a T176 and T150.The NP 435 has a 1st gear of 6.68:1(I like auto's too,but this is quite a crawl ratio).I have 2 of these kicking around that were in old Ford F600 & F700 trucks I had years ago.One of them will eventually be in my CJ5.They also came in Ford 1/2,3/4 and 1 tons.Heres a link to some info on the swap and check out the link to adapting it to the dana 300 for more info and price http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/np435.htm

If you do rebuild your T5 heres a heavy duty retainer option http://www.5speeds.com/t5.htm they also have a decent shim kit.I have heard some people that claim these trannies are junk and others that run thme in Jeeps behind 304's and in 5.0 Mustangs without problems...I'm sure a few heavy duty parts couldn't hurt and the 4.03 first gear is the same as the early CJ T18's ran and the overdrive is a nice feature.Just throwing in some food for thought...
