CJ5 Widetrack/Narrowtrack Axles

I had assumed that my 1983 CJ5 had widetrack axles because I thought all CJ's from 1982 had widetrack axles.I had a discussion with a guy today who said CJ5's NEVER were equipped with the widetrack axles.To prove my point we pulled the rear wheels off my '83 and off a 1975 CJ5 chassis I have.They BOTH measured approx. 51 1/2" from wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface.I am the second owner of my '83.It has less than 40,000 original miles and was owned by a museum before me and the service records don't indicate any axle changes.Anyone have any ideas on this widetrack/narrowtrack deal on the CJ5's??
I am now considering welding new spring perches on the Dana 44 from the '75 and swapping my disc brakes to the '75's Dana 30 to get the 3.73 gears over my current 2.73 gears.

I have in fact now swapped the '75 3.73 geared axles into my '83 CJ5.I still want to eventually install a set of wide track axles,I already have a set of 1 piece axles along with a brand new ARB for a wide track AMC 20.My son and I made a trip to Rhode Island today and fetched this $41. '83 CJ7 for the wide track axles. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...RK%3AMEWN%3AIT I will eventually set these up with 4.10's and put them under my 5.As a bonus it has the 21 gallon fuel tank(my 15 gallon tank just sprung a leak).

being a past CJ 5 owner and puting up with the narrow track for so long I beleive what you are refering to is a cj5 with cj7 axles in itm they are a direct bolt in. the cj7 had 5 inches of extra width in the axles over the cj 5 and many guys started swapping them out and calling them widetrack cj5s

I will try to get some pics up this weekend.Getting ready to go to Jr.'s graduation tonight!Couple of more months to get his CJ7 ready(to replace his YJ...real Jeeps have round headlights, he says) to send him off to college.Maybe I'll get some "off-topic" pics of him on this weekend too.
