Does anyone know how to tell the difference between the standard 231 and the HD version ???

Do you mean the larger chain/more planetary gears? I think it was the dodge box that had those, look for a 231D to replace the 231J thats in there. These stampings are on the silver/red NP/NVG tag on the t-caseAn XJ will always cost you less then any girl ever will, and you will always know when the spark is gone. -
The S10 231's were supposed to have the 1 1/4" chain as well as some of the Dodges. The planetaries changed gear spline thickness around '95.God forgives, rocks don't

There's a thread over on JF where someone took parts from a ford and Chevy 231 and put the six planetary gear and wide chain into his jeep 231j for relativly cheap. I believe it called np 231 upgrades which gives the list of needed parts.Comment
