Be a great weekend to go muddin...hate when our rigs are parked in the garage. UGH!!

Well me and Red Baron took the Jeep out today and it ran great. Not one problem, no backfire, no popping, no loss of power. It looks like it was the resistor that I did not put in. Thanks for all the help you guys "rock" Here is a couple of pics from the trip thanks to Red Baron for the pics.
Another thing that I dont know if it is related to the resistor but the temp never got over 180 even on the uphill climbs. It's not leaking it's marking its territory.

I have a question, you guys said that 1.5 ohms resistor should drop the voltage to 9v from 12v. My voltage going to the primary side of the resistor is 14.30 and the secondary is 12.5 approx. Is this still to much voltage? It runs real good but when I got home the coil was hot, I could put my hand on it and leave it on but just barely. The resistor I put in is a Mallory variable resistor that ranges from 7 to 1.5 when I checked the voltage it was at 1.5 ohms of resistance.
Another question when me and Joe took it out the temp never got over 180, before it use to get to 210 on the same terrain. I am not complaining just curious could the cooler spark contribute to a drop on engine temp? It's not leaking it's marking its territory.

Who knows what that coil can handle or what resistor need to be used with it. If it has a part # I suggest doing a search and see if you can find instructions for it. It is normal for it to heat up but how much idk. As far as temp it might of had something to do with it running like crap and you giving it more pedal to make up for it but it was pretty cold yesturday and 180is perfect. I think your coil or points were overheating causing high resitance causing the ignition no to work correctly. Anyway its obviously running alot better.

Guys, I rode shotgun yesterday and there aint a thing wrong with Neil's rig!! An amazingly smooth ride! I think he's now in denial that an $8 part that took three minutes for his wife to install can't be the fix for three plus weeks of horrible performance, countless hours of guess wrenching and total frustration! Time to move on to the bump stops!!!

Timing can have a big effect on temperature. Also check the Ohms on the ballast resistor immediately after turning the ignition and then again five minutes of running. It should build up resistance after a few minutes of running. Those left standing

Detonation increases temperature because pressurizing air= heat. Ideally the cylinder doesn't contain the full combustion pressure because in a correctly timed engine the combustion happens when the piston is ready to head back down the cylinder. Detonation (pinging) is when the combustion happens early, meaning the piston is still on its way up. The cylinder will hold that pressure for longer and more heat will transfer to the block and head instead of the air being cooled under decompression as it exits the cylinder. Those left standing

Detonation means, that ignition occurs at several spots in the cylinder, not just started by the sparkplug.
The pinging you can hear is not so bad, the high speed detonation or knock you generally do not hear but destroys an engine in short order
