  • TJ: Front Drive Shaft ?

I was under the Jeep today doing some maintainence and noticed a bit of play in my front DS. It's a Tom Wood's Drive Shaft and it's only a couple months old with very few miles on it. It seems like the play is either in the double cardan or the splines where there is a bit of movement if I move it up and down. Is this normal? It's not much play and I haven't noticed any noise or anything when driving, but it reminded me a bit of how my rear DS felt before the center ball went out.

It is most likely in the slip yoke and as long as it is not bad will last for years. If it's to tight the front yoke will not slide in and out on the driveshaft and you definitely do not want that. So as long as it is not excessive you are ok

Is the Slip Yoke the same area where the splines are (the thing that has the rubber boot over it)? Seemed at first that was where the pay was, but I couldn't tell if it was there or in the double cardan.

Yes the part that attaches to the front axle is the slip yoke
