  • Re gearing 30/35

I've been looking around to re gear my D30 and S35 (alloy shafts and detroit) to either 4.56 or 4.88s. I know the ring and pinion size in the 35 arent that large which = weak. Would 4.88 make the pinion gear too small and prone to breaking? 4.56 be the better option?

Randy's Ring & Pinion have GREAT prices on gears.

(Yes, I know an 8.8, 44, 60, 9" are better but Obama and CA have my $)

Don't feel bad, I'm in the same boat!

I recently regeared my '93 YJ's Dana 30/35 to 4.88's and haven't had a problem so far. I added Alloy axle shafts and an ECTED locker to make the rear a Super 35.

IMHO it was probly the best thing I could have ever done. I love it!

As for it being weak... I guess it's not as good as upgradeing it to an 8.8, 9",D44 or D60 but if your looking for "The Cheaper Route" It's the way to go.

(Now I've done it, I said "The Cheaper Route!") Some will say save your money and do it right the first time but, I also understand that not everyone has the "Deep Pockets" to do that, such as in my case. So you gotta do what you gotta do!

I'd also look into putting an aussi locker in the D30 for sure! (That's my next upgrade) it will take some of the pressure off the D35.

If your not out there trying to do the Hammers and you don't get on the skinny peddal alot then you should get along with it just fine!

        Scott,

Are you saying that I made "Mottino" and the "Crack" look easy just because of my front Aussie? LMAO!!!! It made a big difference. Chromoly front axles and an Aussie will do wonders for your Jeep Willard.

Skinny pedal is great! BUT, letting the clutch out and having the rig crawl slowly is much better. I posted this Q on a few other forums, most agree that 4.56 is the way to go. Pinion gets too small any lower, than that and becomes a weak point.
          Thanks for the replies!
