  • Transfer case leaking. Can I use...to seal it?

Ok. The transfer case I bought had a stripped bolt on the bell housing. Bottom bolt. I removed the M8 bolt. Had to tap it bigger to a 3/8 and put it back. I thought I was done. This morning I went out and it's leaking. So, I was told Permatex 3 on the threads and I am good. Well, Napa only has Permatex 2. Could I also use telflone tap or Permatex 2 is better.

    Thanks

Dry it up good and use some no leak silicone on the bolt threads should work also

Thanks Art. I ended up jacking up the rear to keep fluid from coming out. I siliconed the threads with the permatex black silicone. It's used for oils, etc. I know the diff's use this and poor fluid in the axle right away and it seals. Hopefully it works. Otherwise, plan "b" is to drain it and seal the threads.

Just make sure what you use is good for ATF. It tends to soften or get past some sealants. Permatex is usually pretty good about listing this stuff. Also look at Loctite thread sealant - not thread locker though.
