  • transfer case blew up

I have a 1988 jeep cherokee laredo lifted 4 inches on 31s and i was driving yesterday then my transfer case cracked in half and blew a hole in the side. Why or how could this even happen?

Were you in 4 wheel lock on dry pavement?

How much of a leak did it have?
When was the last time you ckd the oil level?
How many miles on this T/case?

Did someone try black powder instead of ATF in the 231?

May not have been a 231. Some had the 242. It could also have been from a loose shift linkage or a bent/broken range fork bouncing around and locked it even though it showed being in 2wheel. If it wasn't low on fluid, it is now. Sorry to hear about it.

I replaced my old 242 with a newish 242 from a junkyard but now when it drives there is a clunking sound coming from the front end, I think its the driveshaft. It's all good, if I can at least get some insight from u guys then I can fix it. Which I have

Check your U-joints and slip-spline on BOTH d/shafts.

What am I looking for when looking at the joints n etc? Just bent metal? We have rotated them 180 degrees to make sure they were put in the right fashion.

You want ZERO slop in the U-joints when you twist'em and keep the slip spline greased.
