  • YJ: Aussie in front?

I really don't have the cash for a selectable locker. And I really like the Aussies. I am sliding some TJ/XJ shafts in my YJ Disco HP30. So from now on everything up to the transfer case will be turning when the Jeep is moving. Is there anyone that is running and Aussie in their front axle without hublocks? And how does it effect the street driveability?

I did it and had no ill effects, just some clicking while turning. It was in the front of my 97 TJ D30.

Been running an Aussie in the front of my TJ for quite awhile now. No streetability issues whatsoever. I ran Royal Purple in it (against AL recommendations) for like a year, and I think it prevented it from breaking in, so on tight turns I'd have some clickety-click going. Except for that I don't even know it's there in 2wd. Since I started running regular gear oil it has gotten quieter. In 2wd I do notice the AL in the rear, but it ain't no biggie.

AL in the front works great for most wheeling except steep climbs when your front end gets light. The benefit of front over rear is that you can point the front where you want to go, whereas the rear always tries to push you straight. Besides that, you need to know that Sailor Jerry is really good rum. If you have a hard time pulling the trigger, a few shots of Sailor Jerry will help put things in perspective.

I was hoping you would chime in Dave. And no joke I have some Sailor Jerry in my glass right now. I'll order it up tonight. Hopefully I'll have it ready to rock by IDTT.

Ordered it up. I will have my TJ shafts ready to slide in with new u-joints and full circle snap rings by the time it gets here. Gatekeeper here I come!

Just installed mine in the D30. Use the thicker oil when installing. I did. I cant even hear it when I am in the dirt! I think it is 80/140 oil? Very quiet in the dirt.

As for the street, can't tell yet. No drive shaft yet.

I know this I'd debatable but I think that it shouldent make a differance weather you have a drive shaft in.

Not sure what you mean by having the drive shaft in, however the Aussie does not engage untill power is put to the drive shaft. its a great lunch box locker and in my opinion putting it up front improves offroad by 80%.

I just haven't driven it on the pavement (because no rear drive shaft). Only the dirt and I couldn't tell. So much so, we had to take it out and get it stuck to confirm both tires were in fact turning..lol! Great locker, glad I took some advice and got it.

i plan on running front and rear AL as well. my question is can i install them at a later time after i gear it. wallet only puts out enough for one thing at a time. i want to have the axles geared first so i can drive it then slap the olckers in when i have the chance. and is there anything special i have to do when installing the al. i heard that they are i bitch to get installed correctly. i have never taken apart an axle before so i have no clue which end is up. but i aint scurred.
