At least the carrier bearings are the easier ones to replace.

Well the 53 Chevy isn't as good of a comuter vehicle as I hoped it would be. I need to get my Jeep back on the road. So I droped off my 8.8 to Oceanside driveline. It should be done today or tomorrow. I think it would be beter to learn gear setup on an axle doesn't disable my vehicle while I work on it.

From what we learned (or didn't learn) from your 8.8, I will start a thread or two with questions about the problems we ran into. Good luck with the axle! I'll hopefully have enough cash to start my axle some time next month.

Must have been a rough ride to work, huh? Sorry to hear that. I'm curious to know what shot you down; why not just post it in this thread instead of another? I think doing otherwise would leave this thread incomplete. Anyway, you had the courage to try and the humility to know when you were in over your head--no shame in that.

I'm looking forward to doing my locker install/ carrier swap soon, but first I have to switch out my ball joints. A locker won't do any good if my wheels are falling off, will it? Oh, and I have air tools now blahahhaahahahahaaaaaaaaa!!!

There was no one thing with that axle that shot me down. It was just that I had worked on it all weekend. And I worked on it every day from the moment I got home from work till I went to bed ever night. My old Chevy needs a carburetor ribald desperately, and it needs piston rings if I want to be driving it daily. I had to put a fuel pump in it yesterday and replace half of the fuel lines. I worried if I keep driving it in its current state I am going to end up stranded or worse.. catch on fire and burn to the ground.

Ok, the short version of the two (install related) problems. I wanted to create new threads because it will get long, and won't have anything to do with an 8.8, or this gear install anymore since Scott had to get back on the road.

First, measuring for pinion depth using this: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-900021/ (Instructions here: http://static.summitracing.com/globa...sum-900021.pdf)

Second, not enough carrier shims... There were .1 sized shims (4 I think...) and .012 sized shims (8? 10?) in the install kit. We needed to build a stack at around ~.248 and a stack at around ~.280 and were unable to as we needed more shims. Since he needs it on the road, we can't keep stopping nightly for dumb issues like that.

Scott, only another $50 and we can figure out that pinion tool: http://www.compperformancegroupstore...ode=Drivetrain

EDIT: On a serious note, this is slightly helpful for the pinion depth part, but still doesn't help measure center of the cap mounting surface: http://www.proformparts.com/PDF/pinionsettingtool.pdf

So far on 5 Jeep axles trail and error works for me, for finding Pinion depth. Some go together in a snap, some put up a fight
With a bit more perseverance you guys would have gotten it.
Still I curse the Jerk that went away from the + and minus marking system made life ever so easy. Was a matter of doing your math slap it together, check the pattern and call it good. Truth be told it's a fairly simple procedure, just takes a bit of patience.

The guy at Oceanside driveline told me that drivers side carrier bearing seat was grooved. He said he would see if there was anything he could do but I might need a new housing. Hope not.

Scott have them put it together with green loctite (bearing and sleeve retainer) on the outside of that race it will hold that pup in place no problem. It's common for the carier bearing races to spin when they get spalled like your one bearing race. I bet the damage is on the side that had the damaged race

Scott, here's what we needed to figure out the pinion depth tool... doesn't look too bad: http://www.angelfire.com/oh5/cpa5oh/cpa5ohtech009.htm

Makes me want to get my r&p while all of this is fresh in my memory...
