  • YJ: Tranny leak... fix on the fly?

changed the oil in my 5-speed, now the tranny is leaking from the front seal? I dunno, it's up in the bell housing, I am actually going wheeling next weekend, so I need to rip out the 5-spd, seal it back up, and toss it back in. Anyone have advice, want to throw wrenches, or recommend a shop that can do this? When I had my YJ on it's side the tranny fluid leaked from the top of the tranny, so I want to get that top seal redone anyways, and while I'm at it, I should go ahead and do the clutch... OMG this is going to hurt the pocketbook...

    HELP

Well, I took the jeep to a fellow wheeler up in Barstow Lenwwod Transmission shop off of Lenwood road and '66' I had forgotten about him and his shop until today when I got to work. I've wheeled with him up in the Panamints before and he's a trusted soul, so I have no fear. I think after discounting my price for good parts, and the associated beer and knuckle busting time to complete this task, his Labor will be darn cheap!

Great88 stepped up to the plate and gave me a ride back home from the Transmission shop, so I treated him to lunch. Even so, I still owe you one for shure Mitch!

I'll let everyone know how it goes...

      Jesse,

It was my pleasure! The only thing that you "owe", is for you and Tori to join us on another mine exploring trip. Have fun this weekend and take lots of pictures. Thanks again for lunch.

well, got my YJ back Yesterday! they called me @ 3:45 and the job was done! They did a new clutch kit, new slave cylinder, throwout bering, flywheel exchange, front seal & bering... not a bad price. The Jeep is feelin' really good now. :thumbs_up

Desert Jewel has a nasty habit of bangin' her oil pan on the rox until she pukes, and I am tired of scooping up all that sand off'a the trail so we can dispose of it properly! so I put in a new oil pan and gasket, oil change (duh) adjusted her E-brake an put in the proper toothy gear for her speedo... so now the jeep knows how fast jewel really drives!

So Jesse, you would recommend the shop in Barstow?

Yeah, I think trust is what we are talking about when it comes to auto mechanics...

They do good work in a timely manner. I won't say they give the greatest deal around or have the best prices or anything like that but I told him that I wanted him to look at the tranny and do whatever he thought needed to be done, I wanted the leak/seal fixed and a new clutch while they had the tranny down so they could have done more and charged me more but he said they only did the work that I needed and stayed real close to the quoted price.

He gave me a good price, don't get me wrong! ... I'm sure if I shopped it around I might have saved a few $$- but I don't really work that way, I know this guy and have wheeled with him- I didn't care so much about saving $20- I wanted to know it's done right.
