Transfer case / Help!!!!!!!!!

My son Scott just bought a 87 XJ, and the other day he said it started making a whining noise, and it felt like it was trying to jump into low range while he was driving it. It has the 242 transfer case in it. ANybody have any experience with these transfer cases? Any advice would be appreciated. Another project, no rest for the weary, Kevin.
