  • Flat towing my '79 CJ5?

    Hi All,

The previous owner claims I just need to put the tranny in neutral, make sure the hubs are unlocked and go (3 speed manual).

He's done that for about 3000 miles...

I've done some searching that says to also put the T-Case in neutral.

What is the proper way to flat tow this thing?

    Thanks!

Okay guys, I got my hands on the service manual, and here is what it says (Chapter 2D-2):

Jeep vehicles can be towed behind recreational vehicles such as a motor home, but be sure you comply with the following instructions to avoid damage to drivetrain components. Be sure to check federal, state, and local laws.

    Manual Transmission
    • Turn ignition key to Off position to unlock steering wheel
    • Shift transmission and transfer case into Neutral position
    • Turn locking hubs to LOCK position, if equipped
I wonder why they recommend to lock the front hubs???
