I've got an 8.8 in mine and I love it. You can get a "Super 88" kit from Superior that will eliminate the C-clips in an 8.8 and give you stronger axle shafts. You're talking about $1000 for all the parts for a complete rearend... axle, super 88, 8.8 mount kit. That's minus the cost of a locker and gears if you don't like the factory ones. A 9" is easily double that for the same stuff. I'd think a 9" would be better because of the removable 3rd member but I don't think it's a whole lot stronger than that built 8.8."The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money."

The 44 is a decent axle. I wheeled JV for a while, on stock shafts, and never had a problem until the last run (blew up the ARB). If you're going to build an axle for the rocks, I wouldn't look at anything but a high pinion something. While they are slightly weaker then low pinion axles, they make up in glorious ground clearance.
What size tire do you plan on running?
