  • XJ OBD-1 stuff

Hey, I just acquired an '89 XJ and wanted to know a few things about the sensors and PCM on that sucker. If I disconnect everything having to do with the AW4 transmission(TCU, Gear Selector Switch, Transmission TPS, Trans Control Assembly), will it throw an engine code? If so, will I need to ground one or more of the sensor inputs?

It's going to be a tow vehicle. I'm dropping a 5-speed in it and want to pass smog without a check engine light.

I'm pretty good with electronics and I know I can solve any engine issue on the spot but if any of you have been there before, the heads-up will help.

I found the TCU and unplugged it. I drove around and it wants to be in 4th at all times. If I drop it into 1-2, it will start in 2. I guess if you seriously cooked your TCU, you could use 2nd and 4th and just sort of hobble it around. You're not completely immobile. No check engine light when I disconnected it. I should be able to just lose all the sensors and slap on an AX-15.
